Russia has affirmed its readiness to support Venezuela amid escalating US military activity near the South American nation. The White House is moving forward with plans for a strike campaign targeting drug smugglers, although legal experts have raised concerns about the legality of such actions under international law.
Following a strategic partnership agreement signed between Caracas and Moscow in May, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia is prepared to fulfill its commitments outlined in the agreement. While the agreement is pending final ratification, both countries’ leaders have endorsed the strategic partnership.
Lavrov mentioned that the agreement is nearing completion, with the Russian Legislature in the final stages of ratification. This agreement emphasizes the continuation of security cooperation, including military-technical collaboration between the two nations.
The US military presence near Venezuela has intensified with the recent arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, along with three warships in the vicinity. This buildup has sparked speculation about President Trump’s intentions towards Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Despite the increased tensions, Venezuela has not formally requested military assistance or the deployment of Russian weaponry in the country. However, a senior Russian official hinted at the possibility of sending Venezuela the experimental Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile, which was previously used in a strike on Ukraine.
