Progressive King Harald of Norway Passes Away at 89

Norway’s King Harald, a progressive leader who came into his own during his three-decade reign, has passed away at the age of 89, the royal palace announced. King Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday morning. He had been hospitalized on August 17 for a bacterial infection in his blood, marking the latest in a series of health challenges.

In 2024, King Harald was hospitalized for an infection while in Malaysia and later received a temporary pacemaker before being flown back to Norway for further treatment. Despite health struggles, King Harald, who had been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991, had vowed not to abdicate, emphasizing his lifelong commitment to the monarchy.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences, highlighting King Harald’s strong ties to Canada. Carney recalled the monarch’s visits to Toronto and Little Norway during his wartime exile and a state visit to Canada in 2002, where he toured various provinces. The Prime Minister praised King Harald’s dedication to Norway and the warm relations between the two nations.

King Harald’s passing comes at a challenging time for the Norwegian royal family. Crown Princess Mette-Marit has faced public scrutiny over her association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while her son Marius Hoiby recently received a four-year prison sentence for rape and domestic violence charges. Despite these controversies, support for the monarchy fluctuated in recent polls.

A descendant of Queen Victoria, King Harald ascended the throne in 1991 and modernized the ceremonial role of the monarch. Known for his compassion and leadership in times of crisis, King Harald comforted the nation after tragedies like the 2011 terror attacks. He also championed openness and diversity, advocating for tolerance and inclusivity in Norwegian society.

King Harald’s legacy as a beloved and forward-thinking monarch is deeply ingrained in Norway’s history, with his reign marked by a commitment to progress and unity.
