Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office has confirmed that he will deliver a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France next month. During his visit, Carney will engage with members of the European Parliament to enhance Canada’s relations with the European Union for the mutual benefit of both regions.
Preceding his speech, the prime minister is scheduled to attend the State of the European Union address, an annual speech delivered by Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission. This address is considered a significant political event in Europe.
Carney’s efforts to strengthen ties with Europe come in light of the ongoing trade disputes between Canada and the United States. Following the breakdown of trade discussions between Ottawa and Washington over the weekend, the visit to the European Parliament holds strategic importance in fostering closer relationships amid strained Canada-US relations.
Canada has recently solidified its collaboration with the EU by signing multiple partnership agreements over the past year. Additionally, Canada has become the inaugural non-European member of Security Action for Europe, which offers €150 billion in defense expenditure loans.
