The film “Obsession” has reached a significant milestone by surpassing $500 million at the global box office, making it the first original film of the 2020s to achieve this feat. This horror hit has outperformed Pixar’s “Elemental” and has become the highest-grossing original movie in the post-pandemic era.
With a budget of only $750,000, “Obsession” has also become the highest-grossing film ever made for under $1 million, surpassing the 1973 film “Enter the Dragon.” Directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, the film was released on May 15 and has seen a steady increase in weekly grosses since its debut, a rare accomplishment not seen since “E.T.”
By the end of its U.S. theatrical run in mid-August, “Obsession” had grossed $263.4 million domestically and an additional $238.1 million internationally, bringing its total earnings to over $501.5 million and counting. The film is yet to be released in South Korea.
The success of “Obsession” has not only set records but has also opened doors for its young cast members. Lead actress Inde Navarette is set to star as Rogue in an upcoming Marvel “X-Men” film, while lead actor Michael Johnston is in talks to join the cast of Universal’s new movie “The Mummy.”
The film’s director, Curry Barker, is already working on a new project titled “Anything but Ghosts,” where he will also have an acting role alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson. The success of “Obsession” has undoubtedly paved the way for Barker’s future endeavors in the horror genre.
