Moroccan authorities apprehended over 110 individuals on Saturday while attempting to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, amid heightened security following social media calls for another large-scale migrant influx. This incident occurred following a recent surge of over 72,000 migrants into Ceuta, leading to tensions within the European Union and fueling anti-immigrant sentiments globally. Among those arrested were migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and Moroccan citizens near Fnideq, the city facing Ceuta.
Spanish news sources reported that Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse migrant groups near the border. The Moroccan Interior Ministry instructed journalists to leave Fnideq abruptly, without specifying reasons. Meanwhile, Ceuta saw tightened security measures, with Spanish soldiers guarding key locations and an increased police presence on the streets.
In response to the situation, Madrid has implemented a maritime barrier and deployed additional law enforcement personnel to Ceuta. Officials emphasized the need to maintain order and prevent future incidents like the mass crossing on July 30. The Interior Ministry stated that migrants entering irregularly would not be permitted to stay or travel to mainland Spain, except in exceptional circumstances.
Moroccan authorities have ramped up security near the border, including road checkpoints and police presence. Reports indicated similar measures in Spain’s other North African enclave, Melilla. Despite efforts to prevent migrants from reaching northern Morocco, some individuals were observed taking alternate mountain routes towards Fnideq.
One witness reported that schools in Fnideq had been converted into accommodations for security forces stationed near the border. In the aftermath of the recent crossing attempt, a young migrant advised against further attempts, warning of the hardships and urging others not to follow suit. Another migrant highlighted the challenges faced by those attempting to cross and the need for a sustainable solution to the ongoing crisis.
