A manhunt is in progress for a hang glider who disappeared in a popular tourist destination, leaving authorities puzzled. The missing individual, a 59-year-old experienced hang glider pilot, vanished yesterday afternoon in the New South Wales Mid North Coast region of Australia. The incident occurred after he launched from Lindeman’s Point, approximately 129km south of Port Macquarie, near Forster.
Another hang glider who took off shortly after the missing man, later crashing into the water, reported the disappearance around 4pm yesterday. Fortunately, the second glider emerged unscathed from the incident.
The gliding location near Booti Booti National Park, known for its picturesque beaches and challenging hiking trails, has now become the focus of search efforts. Marine Rescue Forster Tuncurry mobilized rescue operations, with volunteers scouring the area from Seven Mile Beach to Elizabeth Beach until late evening yesterday, and continuing the search today.
Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Courtney Greenslade mentioned that adverse weather conditions have hindered the search efforts. The team had to halt operations around 3pm local time after spending over six hours searching the waters south of Forster.
Inspector Greenslade further stated that Marine Rescue NSW volunteers are on standby to assist further if requested by the NSW Police Marine Area Command. Meanwhile, Inspector David Coyle from Manning Great Lakes Police District described the incident as unexpected, emphasizing the missing man’s expertise in hang gliding.
Graeme Cran, a paraglider from Mid North Coast Flyers, highlighted the risks associated with aviation sports, emphasizing the need for proper training to handle emergency situations.
