Only one individual is currently detained on suspicion of attempted murder following a horrifying mass stabbing incident on a train in Huntingdon the previous night, as reported by British Transport Police.
British Transport Police (BTP) stated that a 32-year-old man, who was apprehended in connection with the train knife assault in Huntingdon, is now considered the sole suspect. The man, hailing from Peterborough, boarded the train at Peterborough station. Another individual, a 35-year-old from London, has been released without further action, according to BTP.
Authorities have ascertained that the released individual was not involved in the attack. Additionally, police verified the recovery of a knife at the scene.
Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy stated, “Our investigation is progressing rapidly, and we are confident that no other individuals are sought in connection with the incident. Specialized detectives are delving into the background of the suspect in custody and the events leading up to the attack.”
The statement further clarified that a 35-year-old man from London, who was also apprehended at the scene, has been released without further action. Initially believed to be involved in the attack, subsequent inquiries confirmed his non-involvement.
Of the individuals hospitalized, five have been discharged, while one remains in critical condition. The critically injured individual is an LNER rail staff member who was on the train and intervened to thwart the attacker, as revealed by detectives who reviewed the train’s CCTV footage.
During the eight-minute knife spree that resulted in two individuals fighting for their lives, terrified passengers barricaded themselves in toilets and armed themselves with makeshift weapons. Eleven individuals were hospitalized following the bloodshed on the LNER service bound for London King’s Cross.
Witnesses recounted chaotic scenes as blood-soaked victims tried to escape the attacker, with one passenger even using a Jack Daniels bottle to defend against the assailant. The incident occurred in Coach J of the train shortly after its departure from Peterborough.
British Transport Police initially arrested two men on suspicion of attempted murder, a 32-year-old black British national and a 35-year-old British national of Caribbean descent. BTP Superintendent John Loveless dispelled any notions of terrorism, emphasizing that the attack appeared to be isolated.
