Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the hammer throw events at the Diamond League competition held in Chorzow, Poland. Rogers, from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience at the Silesian Stadium with a winning throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt. She holds the titles of Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion. American DeAnna Price secured second place with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third with 71.95 meters.
Continuing Canada’s hammer throw success, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., clinched the top spot in the men’s event with a best throw of 82.92 meters. Katzberg is the reigning Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion. Germany’s Merlin Hummel came in second with 81.25 meters, while Hungary’s Bence Halász finished third with 79.44 meters.
In the men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished sixth with a time of 9.96 seconds. Jamaica’s Oblique Seville claimed victory in a meeting-record time of 9.83 seconds, with Kenny Bednarek from the United States in second place at 9.87 seconds. Christian Coleman, a former world champion, secured third place in 9.93 seconds.
In the women’s 100m event, American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden triumphed with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia finished second with 10.83 seconds, and Sha’Carri Richardson from the United States, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medalist, took third place with a time of 10.96 seconds.
Surprising the crowd, American Ethan Strand claimed victory in the men’s 1,500m race with a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan teenager Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech secured second place in 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third with 3:31.16. Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen finished fourth after recently returning from Achilles surgery.
The next Diamond League event will take place on August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, followed by the Diamond League Final in Brussels. The season will culminate with the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest from September 11-13. Ethan Katzberg has qualified for the Ultimate Championship, while Camryn Rogers will not compete as the women’s hammer throw is not part of the championship program.
