Marvel’s blockbuster film “Avengers: Endgame” reclaimed its position as the highest-grossing movie worldwide over the weekend, surpassing James Cameron’s “Avatar” in total box office earnings. “Endgame” achieved a gross revenue of $2.9255 billion US, narrowly edging out “Avatar” at $2.9237 billion US.
The resurgence in box office performance for “Endgame” followed a recent re-release in cinemas, marking the second time the film has overtaken “Avatar” in earnings. The revamped version of the superhero ensemble movie debuted with an additional four minutes of footage, generating $86 million US globally ($26 million US domestically) in its latest run, according to Disney, the film’s parent company.
The re-release of “Endgame” served as a precursor to the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series. Set for release on December 18, the new installment will reintroduce familiar characters, including popular actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.
This achievement by “Endgame” is significant as James Cameron’s “Avatar” had held the highest-grossing film record since 1998 with “Titanic.” Despite lower ticket prices, “Avatar” surged to the top spot in 2010 after just 39 days in theaters. However, “Endgame” broke this streak in 2019, prompting Cameron to gracefully acknowledge the new record holder.
After a 2021 re-release in China, “Avatar” once again surpassed “Endgame” in total earnings, reaching over $2.8 billion US. The directors of “Endgame,” Joe and Anthony Russo, acknowledged Cameron’s success, passing on their congratulations via social media.
The entertainment industry has experienced a mix of successes and disappointments at the box office, with notable performances from unexpected genre films like “Obsession,” “Resident Evil,” and “Backrooms.” This trend suggests a growing audience interest in unique and original content over established franchise offerings.
