The individual responsible for what the RCMP characterized as a “mass shooting” in Fort Smith, N.W.T., has been apprehended. The arrest took place without any complications around 4:30 a.m. MT on Sunday, according to a police statement. Charges are expected as the investigation progresses. This suspect is now in custody along with two other individuals of interest detained on Saturday.
Mayor Dana Fergusson expressed a sense of relief upon hearing the news. She mentioned, “It’s one more bad actor removed from the community, you know. Having that individual detained and arrested truly brings peace of mind to people.”
Mayor Fergusson, who also owns the bar where the shooting transpired, was present during the incident. The altercation outside Dirty O’Fergies bar, occurring as the Fireweed Festival’s inaugural event concluded, resulted in gunfire and three individuals sustaining injuries. A shelter-in-place directive was issued, lasting over 13 hours, as the community went into lockdown.
The identities of the victims and the specifics of their injuries have not been disclosed yet. Mayor Fergusson stated that they were medically evacuated from the area and are receiving care. The police presence significantly increased, with additional resources from Yellowknife and Yukon aiding in the suspect’s apprehension.
After the lockdown was lifted, community members provided assistance to ensure everyone’s needs were met. Mayor Fergusson commended the town for coming together and supporting one another during challenging times, showcasing the community’s resilience.
The Fireweed Festival, postponed during the lockdown, resumed activities with a message of resilience and unity. Festival organizers highlighted the community’s ability to rebound from adversity, likening it to the fireweed plant’s ability to bloom after adversity.
The festival continued into the following day, with organizers urging attendees to support impacted vendors and artists. Mayor Fergusson observed a stark contrast between the subdued atmosphere on Saturday and the lively scene on Sunday, emphasizing the importance of bringing joy to the community.
Authorities are requesting anyone present during the altercation preceding the shooting to come forward for questioning at the Fort Smith RCMP detachment on Monday between 1 p.m. MT and 9 p.m. MT, even if they have already provided information to the police.
