“BMO CEO Raises Concerns on AI Trustworthiness in Banking”

Bank of Montreal’s CEO, Darryl White, raised concerns about the trustworthiness of artificial intelligence agents when it comes to handling personal banking details. Speaking at the Toronto Global Forum, White emphasized the rapid advancement of AI technology outpacing regulatory frameworks and protective measures. This sentiment follows recent comments from RBC’s CEO regarding the potential restriction of Meta’s Muse AI agent from accessing client data at the bank.

White highlighted the long-standing comfort individuals have developed in sharing personal information online, cautioning against freely providing sensitive data like banking credentials, credit card details, social insurance numbers, or PINs to any AI agents. He stressed the importance of educating the public on these risks.

In a shift towards AI integration, major Canadian banks, including BMO, have heavily invested in artificial intelligence technologies in recent years. White proudly shared that BMO’s insurance division now utilizes AI for underwriting decisions, significantly reducing processing times from 28 days to a mere 10 seconds.

AI agents such as Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s ChatGPT can, with client consent, access bank accounts and credit card information to offer financial insights and monitor transactions, though human approval is typically required for purchases. Reflecting the cautious approach, RBC’s CEO, Dave McKay, mentioned the bank’s deliberation on potentially restricting Muse’s access to client data, balancing consumer needs with privacy and security concerns.

Several other prominent financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Charles Schwab, have already taken steps to restrict or limit external AI agents’ access to client data, underscoring the increasing scrutiny on AI’s role in the banking sector.
