Voters are set to cast their ballots on Monday in three federal byelections in the constituencies of North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, Beaches-East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec.
With current vacancies, the Liberal party holds 170 seats in the House of Commons, while opposition parties collectively have 166 seats. To maintain control of the legislative agenda once all seats are filled, the Liberals need to secure victories in at least two of the contested byelections.
The most closely watched race is anticipated to be in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, where the seat was vacated by former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who resigned after being appointed to the Senate. The Liberals and Bloc Québécois are vying for the seat, with polls indicating a tight competition between the two parties. Daniel Gobeil is the Liberal candidate, while Caroline Dubé is representing the Bloc.
In addition to the main contenders, other candidates in the Chicoutimi-Le Fjord riding include Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, Raphaël Émond for the New Democratic Party, and Nathe Perrone for the Green Party.
In the Beaches-East York riding in Toronto, candidates are aiming to succeed former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who secured a significant victory in the 2025 federal election. The candidates in this riding are Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.
Meanwhile, in North Vancouver-Capilano, candidates are competing to fill the seat left vacant by former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who was appointed as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The candidates in this riding are Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.
CBC News will offer special coverage of the byelections, featuring chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and Power & Politics host David Cochrane, starting at 9:30 p.m. ET. The coverage can be accessed on various CBC News platforms.
If the Liberals lose all three byelections, they will have more opportunities in upcoming contests to secure the necessary wins for a majority in the House of Commons.
Additionally, there are pending byelections in Quebec’s Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, and Laurier-Sainte-Marie ridings, as well as in the Ontario riding of Scarborough North. Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall is expected to resign from her seat in the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton-Melville, and Conservative MP Larry Brock plans to step down from his seat in the Ontario riding of Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations next month.
