NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, hailing from Hamilton and having honed his skills with the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, aged 21, received well wishes and support from the OHL following the unfortunate event.
The St. Louis Blues drafted Mayich as a defenseman in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. His player record indicates his earlier involvement with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before transitioning to the 67’s.
Reports from the OHL suggest that Mayich was hospitalized in Arizona on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season. The St. Louis Blues have expressed their concerns for Mayich’s recovery, with Doug Armstrong, the team’s president of hockey operations, emphasizing their thoughts and prayers for his well-being during his medical treatment in Arizona.
Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student from the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident but has not disclosed the student’s name.
OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed sentiments of support and well-wishes for Mayich, his family, and teammates. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly the Huskies, celebrated Mayich’s achievements when he joined the 67’s in 2021 and when the Blues selected him in 2023, highlighting his long-standing affiliation with the organization since childhood.
