“Canada’s Lead Negotiator Refutes U.S. Trade Claims”

Canada’s lead trade negotiator with the U.S. refutes certain assertions made by American officials regarding the breakdown of trade discussions. Specifically, there are discrepancies over claims that Canada introduced last-minute demands on the automotive sector and that U.S. negotiators weren’t receptive to French language discoverability regulations.

Janice Charette emphasized that Canada consistently addressed all aspects of the automotive industry throughout the negotiations. This contradicts U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s statement that Canada only raised concerns about tariff relief on medium- and heavy-duty trucks towards the end of the talks.

Charette clarified that the issue of medium- and heavy-duty trucks was discussed on multiple occasions before the final negotiations. Despite not directly refuting Lutnick’s account, she highlighted that the Canadians had brought up the matter earlier in the week.

In response to claims made by American officials, Charette stressed that Canada sought the best trade deal for key sectors, including the automotive industry, with minimal tariffs and optimal market access.

The dispute between the two countries extends to various issues, including French language discoverability rules and limitations on Canada’s ability to engage in future free trade agreements. While U.S. officials have contested Canada’s stance on these matters, Charette maintained that Canada stood firm on protecting language rights and trade negotiation autonomy.

Charette expressed openness to resuming negotiations with the U.S., provided that any agreement aligns with Canada’s economic interests without compromising sovereignty. Trust between the two nations remains a crucial factor moving forward, with Charette emphasizing the need for a transparent and mutually beneficial trade agreement.

As Canada prepares for potential prolonged trade tensions, the government has announced measures to counter U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. Additionally, financial support is being extended to assist affected workers and businesses.

Reflecting on the outcome of the negotiations, Charette commended the Canadian team’s efforts, emphasizing their thorough and exhaustive approach to the discussions.
