Actor and champion for disability rights, RJ Mitte, who portrayed a character with cerebral palsy on the hit show “Breaking Bad,” passed away at the age of 34 on Monday, confirmed by authorities and his representatives. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa reported his death at around 1:30 p.m. at what was believed to be his residence in Brownsville, Texas. Although the cause of death was not disclosed, an autopsy is scheduled.
Famous for his role as Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character in “Breaking Bad,” Mitte appeared in nearly all episodes across the show’s five seasons, recently hailed as the best of the 21st century in a New York Times poll. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three, Mitte mentioned in a 2014 interview with The Associated Press that his personal experiences with disability, physical therapy, family issues, and high medical expenses, which paralleled themes in the show, enhanced his performance.
Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte ventured into acting in 2006 upon moving to Los Angeles, securing minor roles in sitcoms before landing the role in “Breaking Bad” in 2007 at a young age. The series aired from 2008 to 2013. His representatives commemorated his commitment to disability awareness and inclusion, stating that he used his influence to challenge stereotypes and advocate for better representation.
Co-star Bryan Cranston paid tribute to Mitte on Instagram, praising him as a talented actor who brought immense energy and authenticity to his character. Mitte’s acting credits extended to shows like “Switched at Birth” and “Guardians of Justice,” alongside producing various independent films. Additionally, he actively supported causes related to cerebral palsy as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and through his own Mitte Foundation, which focused on philanthropic initiatives and community support for individuals with disabilities.
