Bronwen Lewis, a singer-songwriter from Wales, never imagined that her Welsh renditions of Dolly Parton’s songs would lead to a collaboration with the country music icon herself. Lewis began sharing her covers of Parton’s songs online around two years ago, with her version of “Jolene” catching the attention of Parton’s niece, singer Jada Star. This eventually led to a recording collaboration between Lewis, Star, and Parton.
The new Welsh rendition of “Jolene,” featuring vocals from Parton in both English and Welsh, was recently released on major streaming platforms. It marks Parton’s second posthumous song release, recorded before her passing in August at the age of 80. Lewis expressed gratitude for Parton’s belief in the project and in her and Star’s talents.
Expressing her lifelong admiration for country music and Parton, Lewis highlighted the authenticity and emotional depth in Parton’s music, which she felt resonated perfectly with the Welsh language. The collaboration brought immediate tears to Lewis upon hearing Parton’s vocals in both languages.
Parton, who is believed to have Welsh ancestry, readily agreed to participate in the collaboration, appreciating the respect shown to her music and heritage. Star emphasized that the collaboration was not merely a favor to her, but a genuine appreciation for the tribute to Parton’s work and Welsh roots.
The Welsh language, with a rich history predating the Roman Empire, has faced challenges over the centuries, including suppression efforts. Despite this, around 17.8% of people in Wales speak Welsh today, as per the country’s 2021 census. Lewis expressed immense pride in their language and culture, believing that the collaboration with Parton will showcase the beauty and universality of heartbreak through music, emphasizing the commonalities that connect people regardless of language or background.
