A monarch butterfly named “MB26011,” one of over 29 tagged with tiny radio trackers, successfully completed its migration from Winnipeg to Mexico in just five weeks. The butterfly covered approximately 2,300 kilometers during this remarkable journey, evading threats like predators and vehicle collisions along the way.
Laura Burns, the conservation program manager at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, expressed awe at the monarch’s feat, highlighting the extraordinary nature of their migration. Working with researchers from Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Living Prairie Museum, the team tagged the butterflies in Manitoba for the first time, marking a significant milestone in monarch conservation efforts.
Despite some butterflies not making it out of the province, likely due to tag malfunctions, the tracking data provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by these endangered insects. Habitat destruction remains a primary threat to monarch populations, leading to their endangered status in Canada.
While MB26011 has successfully reached Mexico, other butterflies are still on their journey, facing various obstacles along the way. Burns emphasized the importance of identifying key stopover spots to enhance conservation efforts for these iconic butterflies.
As the monarchs continue their migration, researchers and the public track their movements using radio telemetry towers, shedding light on their remarkable journey from Canada to Mexico and back.
