Do you recall the days when you could visit your local suburban mall, watch a performance by a popular music group near the food court, and shop for new clothing all in one trip? Well, that nostalgia is making a comeback in a new form.
Recently, Gap revealed its partnership with the up-and-coming boy band Just Your Type (JYT) for the company’s inaugural venture into its “fashiontainment platform.”
The concept of the platform may sound a bit ambiguous, but according to Gap, it aims to utilize its renowned brands to produce engaging content. This collaboration will involve co-creating a documentary series detailing the band’s formation and early experiences, designing an exclusive clothing line with the five members, and generating social media content to complement the project.
Emulating a strategy seen in the pop music scene of the 1990s and 2000s, the collaboration will also include a tour across various malls in the United States.
CBC News attempted to reach out to Gap regarding the potential extension of the tour to Canada but has not received a response yet.
Introducing Just Your Type
JYT comprises five young talents: Recker Eans, Toby Green, Caden Adamonis, Bryan Chan, and Tyler George.
If you haven’t come across JYT before, that’s understandable—this group only unveiled their debut single, What U Want, at the close of last year and currently has a total of four released songs.
Despite their recent entry into the music scene, industry insiders have shown immense confidence in the band from the outset. In January, Republic Records officially signed the group in collaboration with Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Freddy Wexler, who played a pivotal role in their development. Wexler has previously contributed to chart-topping hits for renowned artists like Justin Bieber, Blackpink, and Ariana Grande.
Boy band JYT, or Just Your Type, is partnering with Gap to revive the mall tour, a trend from the 1990s where emerging artists performed in shopping centres to take advantage of foot traffic.
Wexler, in an interview with UDiscover Music, expressed his belief in JYT’s unique qualities, emphasizing that the band’s formation was organic and not contrived. He foresees JYT as a groundbreaking American boy band, a distinction that hasn’t been seen on a global scale in decades.
With their harmonious vocals and synchronized dance moves, JYT seems poised to carry on the legacy of iconic boy bands like NSync and the Backstreet Boys and possibly emerge as the American counterpart to the meticulously choreographed, visually and musically refined groups that have emerged from South Korea, such as the worldwide sensation BTS.
