California Governor Gavin Newsom predicts that internal pressure within the Republican Party will compel President Donald Trump to resume negotiations with Canada. In an interview with CBC News, Newsom highlighted the growing criticism Trump is facing within his own party. This development comes ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, where the Republican majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives is at risk.
Trade discussions between the U.S. and Canada hit a roadblock recently, leading Prime Minister Mark Carney to pause negotiations. Shortly after, Trump imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods worth around $28 billion. Despite this, Newsom expressed confidence that Trump cannot afford to prolong the break in talks.
The governor firmly stated California’s stance against Trump’s actions towards Canada, emphasizing their disapproval. He criticized Trump as an “invasive species in the White House” and expressed embarrassment as an American.
California has felt the impact of the trade conflict, particularly in the wine industry. The state’s wine exports to Canada, its largest foreign market, have declined significantly. Newsom acknowledged the frustration among California wine producers towards Canada and attributed the situation to Trump’s policies.
Newsom commended Carney’s approach in dealing with Trump, noting that Trump respects strength but not weakness. Despite not seeking re-election as governor, Newsom is considered a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential race. He denied that his opposition to Trump’s tariffs is driven by political ambitions but did not rule out a future presidential bid.
