Outkast Members Sue Rapper Ovrkast for Trademark Infringement

Outkast members Big Boi and André 3000 have filed a lawsuit against Ovrkast, a rapper and music producer based in Oakland, alleging trademark infringement, unfair competition, and breach of contract due to similarities in their names.

The legal action, initiated in Georgia on September 16 by High Schoolers LLC, the entity managing Outkast’s trademarks, claims that Ovrkast, also known as Silas Wilson, deliberately used a name closely resembling Outkast without permission despite an agreement to cease such usage.

Citing Outkast’s significant presence in southern hip-hop and the band’s esteemed brand, the 31-page complaint outlines failed attempts to resolve the matter amicably. The lawsuit references a 2025 Rolling Stone interview with Wilson where he discussed confusion between Ovrkast and Outkast as evidence of misleading fans.

In response to the allegations, Wilson, known for collaborating with artists such as Earl Sweatshirt and Drake, posted a reaction on Instagram, expressing surprise and tagging both Big Boi and André 3000. He shared Instagram Story posts featuring a broken heart emoji, the song “Why Can’t We Be Friends” by War, and a video disputing the lawsuit’s credibility.

The lawsuit details that Big Boi and André 3000 sent a cease and desist letter to Ovrkast in June 2025. Despite reaching a settlement agreement where Ovrkast would transition to the name Overkxst by July 15, 2026, Wilson allegedly delayed compliance and later ceased communication.

Outkast accuses Wilson of breaching the settlement agreement by persisting in using the Ovrkast name. They seek a court order to prohibit Wilson from using the name, reimbursement for legal expenses, and surrender of all profits gained through the disputed activities. Moreover, they demand the destruction of all Ovrkast-branded merchandise.

Efforts to obtain a comment from Wilson regarding the lawsuit by CBC News were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
