Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury that has kept him sidelined since his Wimbledon victory. Sinner, who secured his second consecutive Wimbledon title by defeating Alexander Zverev, opted to skip the lead-up tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati in preparation for the U.S. Open.
In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete when the main draw commences on August 30. Despite intensive efforts by his team and medical staff, Sinner acknowledged that more time was needed to fully recover from his right knee issue.
Sinner, the 2024 U.S. Open champion, was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final. Alcaraz, who has been recovering from a right wrist injury that kept him out of action since April, confirmed his readiness to participate in the upcoming U.S. Open.
The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a focal point in men’s tennis in recent years, as evidenced by their showdowns in the last three Grand Slam finals in 2025. Alcaraz emerged victorious in their latest encounter, ending Sinner’s title run, which began with a victory over Taylor Fritz in the 2024 final.
Despite an impressive record of 44-3 with six titles this year, Sinner faced a setback at the French Open when he squandered a two-set lead against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Following his Wimbledon triumph, Sinner had been preparing for a return to New York, where he made his Grand Slam debut in 2019.
This marks the first time that Sinner will miss a Grand Slam event since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019.
