NASA’s efforts to salvage the Swift Observatory have been terminated, condemning the telescope to re-enter the atmosphere in the coming months. Katalyst Space Technologies, in conjunction with NASA, revealed the decision following complications with the Link spacecraft’s mission to rescue the observatory.
Katalyst disclosed that due to issues with controlling the spacecraft, the Link will not be able to capture and maneuver Swift to a higher orbit. Consequently, Swift, known for its two-decade-long study of significant cosmic events like gamma ray bursts and supernovae, is expected to descend through the atmosphere, with its demise anticipated around October.
In an attempt to enhance Swift’s orbit longevity, NASA had allocated $30 million to Katalyst. However, the observatory’s rapid descent was accelerated by heightened solar activity. The rescue spacecraft encountered challenges shortly after its launch in July, entering an uncontrollable spin. Despite efforts to stabilize the spacecraft, persistent problems with its orientation and positioning persisted.
Jared Isaacman, NASA’s administrator, expressed disappointment with the outcome but emphasized the mission’s significance. Katalyst will now focus on demonstrating Link’s capabilities within close proximity to Swift for future rescue missions.
Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee described the mission as ambitious, with an expedited timeline of less than a year. Lee acknowledged the risks involved but highlighted the valuable insights gained throughout the process.
Initially launched in 2004, Swift had its scientific instruments deactivated earlier this year to slow its descent, currently orbiting at 345 kilometers. The plan was to elevate Swift back to its original 600-kilometer orbit, enabling further astronomical observations.
The Hubble Space Telescope, NASA’s 36-year-old iconic observatory, may also require an orbital boost due to solar influences, with plans for a potential rescue mission if the Swift operation had succeeded. However, it remains uncertain if Hubble will receive assistance following the conclusion of the Swift mission.
