The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen has reported that around 150 structures have been either damaged or destroyed by the Bald Range fire. Among these structures, approximately 40 were within the boundaries of the District of Summerland. Efforts are underway to reach out to the affected property owners to provide support and assistance.
As more Summerland residents returned following evacuation orders due to the Bald Range wildfire, assessments have been completed. Currently, 22% of the 5,500 properties that were on evacuation orders are now under evacuation alerts. These alerts cover properties east of Highway 97 and the Trout Creek neighborhood on the west side of the highway.
Mayor Doug Holmes expressed hope for the safe return of more evacuees in the upcoming days. However, he emphasized the need for caution as fire conditions can change rapidly. The BC Wildfire Service anticipates a shift in firefighting efforts to the northwest, where fires are encroaching into forested areas amidst hotter and drier weather conditions.
Residents are advised to expect lingering smoke and ground fires within the fire perimeter in the weeks ahead. Despite challenges, officials are confident in the progress made in containing the fire perimeter closest to the communities. The BCWS highlighted the importance of reporting any smoke rising from unburned areas outside the fire perimeter.
Although uncertainties remain for some residents awaiting news on their properties, efforts are being made to notify affected individuals following the completion of damage assessments. Mayor Holmes acknowledged the challenges faced by the community but expressed optimism about the gradual return of residents to their homes.
The BC Wildfire Service cautioned about persistent smoke in central and southern B.C., with light winds prevailing at the start of the week. Environment Canada issued air quality warnings for parts of southern B.C. due to wildfire smoke impact, with hotter and drier conditions expected in most parts of the province.
Firefighting reinforcements from various Canadian provinces, Mexico, and Australia have arrived to assist with the ongoing wildfires. These reinforcements are crucial given the dynamic and challenging conditions around the fires in British Columbia. The fires continue to pose a significant threat, with efforts ongoing to contain and manage the evolving situation.
