“New Algal Bloom Tracker Monitors Toxic Blooms in Alberta”

Researchers in Alberta are closely monitoring blue-green algae, and the public can now track these toxic algal blooms at six lakes through a newly launched website. The Algal Bloom Tracker utilizes satellite imagery and lake sampling to provide real-time updates on a user-friendly map.

Rolf Vinebrooke, an aquatic ecology professor at the University of Alberta and one of the project researchers, explains that the map is regularly updated using satellite images of Alberta lakes. This technology allows for a comprehensive view of the entire lake, aiding in identifying the nature of the algal bloom and areas to avoid.

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can proliferate in nutrient-rich Alberta lakes during the summer, posing health risks due to toxin production. The blooms can lead to liver damage if ingested and interfere with nerve impulses, causing neurological issues.

The Algal Bloom Tracker enables lake visitors to check for current or recent blooms and review historical bloom data. The prototype currently covers six lakes, selected to represent varying bloom frequencies, with plans to expand to around 50 lakes in Alberta over the next three years.

Alberta Health Services issues health advisories when excessive blue-green algae levels are detected in lakes, with over 25 advisories currently in effect across the province. These advisories warn against swimming or using water from affected areas.

The Algal Bloom Tracker operates separately from official health advisories, providing a tool for the public to make informed decisions about water activities. Vinebrooke emphasizes the importance of following health advisories due to the dynamic nature of algal blooms.

While bloom intensities have increased since 2000, historical satellite data suggests that Alberta’s lakes have not significantly worsened overall. The project aims to enhance understanding of blue-green algae and its impacts on Alberta’s ecosystems and communities.

The Algal Bloom Tracker website highlights the importance of identifying harmful algal blooms for various stakeholders, including scientists, policymakers, residents, and recreational lake users, due to the negative impacts on recreation, tourism, real estate, and Indigenous communities.
