Authorities have verified the passing of a third individual at the Burning Man festival, following the announcement of two other deaths during the annual gathering in the Nevada desert. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office disclosed that Armando Ramirez from Truckee, California, perished while en route to a hospital in Reno, Nevada, approximately 190 kilometers south of the festival. The 51-year-old was declared deceased in the ambulance during the early hours of Friday. The examiner’s office stated that the cause and manner of death are pending further testing, emphasizing that there are no suspicions of foul play.
The festival, renowned for its focus on art installations and self-expression during its week-long desert run, previously reported two fatalities, which were confirmed by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office. Craigh Mann, aged 60, was discovered deceased on Saturday around 3 p.m. local time. The festival indicated that he was found in a trailer he shared with his partner. Additionally, a male attendee in his mid-50s suffered a medical emergency, subsequently passing away after receiving urgent medical attention. The sheriff’s office identified him as Sampson Tshombe, noting that he died at the festival’s temporary medical facility on Thursday.
Although neither Mann nor Tshombe’s deaths displayed signs of foul play, both individuals will undergo autopsy and toxicology screenings, with results expected within six to eight weeks. This year commemorates the festival’s 40th anniversary, commencing on August 30 and concluding on Monday. The event draws tens of thousands of participants annually to camp in the wilderness and engage in avant-garde performances, culminating in the symbolic burning of a large wooden man-shaped sculpture.
Tragically, fatalities have occurred at previous editions of the festival. Since its relocation from Baker Beach in San Francisco to the Black Rock Desert in 1990, over half a dozen deaths have been recorded. Jerry Allen, Pershing County sheriff and coroner, mentioned in a statement that Burning Man typically registers one fatality per year, as reported by NBC News.
