The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has kicked off with a diverse selection of films catering to book enthusiasts. Running from Thursday, Sept. 10 to Sunday, Sept. 20, TIFF 2026 offers a lineup of 293 titles, including several highly anticipated literary-inspired movies worth adding to both your reading and viewing lists.
One such film is “YAGA,” based on Kat Sandler’s work of the same name. Directed by Toronto playwright and showrunner Kat Sandler, the movie follows the story of Carson, a local detective, and a private investigator as they search for a missing party boy, Henry Park. Their investigation leads them to a university professor specializing in urban myths, unveiling a web of secrets and mysteries.
Another standout adaptation is “A Long Winter,” based on Colm Tóibín’s novella. Set in the cold mountains of Colorado, the film portrays a young man named Mike grappling with his mother’s disappearance during a blizzard, forcing him to navigate life alongside his distant father.
“Becoming Heumann” brings to life the memoir of disability rights activist Judy Heumann. The film showcases Judy’s journey from childhood paralysis due to polio to her adulthood activism, leading to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
In “Ba’s Book,” filmmaker Ashley Duong explores her father’s experiences as a Vietnamese refugee through a documentary lens, shedding light on their family’s migration to Canada.
“Carrie,” an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, reimagines the tale of the telekinetic teenager for a Gen Z audience, delving into themes of revenge and teenage struggles.
“Clarissa” transports Virginia Woolf’s classic novel “Mrs. Dalloway” to contemporary Nigeria, offering a fresh perspective on societal issues and personal reflections.
“Edward Said: Between Worlds” is a documentary chronicling the life of Palestinian American scholar Edward Said, known for his impactful works on postcolonial studies.
These are just a few of the captivating literary-inspired films showcased at TIFF 2026, offering audiences a rich tapestry of storytelling and creativity from around the globe.
