German authorities are probing a drone loaded with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to escalate retaliation against nations aiding Ukraine.
In an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, Lavrov stated, “We will employ more severe methods to dismantle everything supporting the West in supplying Kyiv’s war machine. We are already taking action.”
The discovery of the drone, containing an unknown explosive device, was made by an airport employee in the security zone of the cargo operations area near the south runway of Leipzig airport, classified as “critical infrastructure.” This airport serves as a strategic NATO hub for transporting armaments, ammunition, weapons, and military supplies to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
Notably, the drone was found next to a Ukrainian cargo plane, marking what Germany’s interior minister described as “a heightened level of risk” for the country. Alexander Dobrindt expressed that the incident does not appear amateurish and is being treated by investigators as part of a “professional hybrid threat scenario.”
While German authorities are investigating the incident, they have not disclosed the drone’s origin. However, U.S. intelligence officials informed the Wall Street Journal that intelligence reports suggested the drone likely belonged to the Russian government.
Amid the cautious response from Berlin, efforts are underway to enhance anti-drone capabilities without premature attribution. Dobrindt emphasized the ongoing process of gathering facts and refrained from making premature comments as the investigation progresses.
Authorities caution that Russia is already employing various tactics like drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations across Europe, particularly in the lead-up to regional elections in Germany. Dobrindt stressed the country’s daily exposure to new threats and described ongoing hybrid warfare targeting Germany.
Moreover, recent incidents, including the arrest of a suspected Russian spy scouting sabotage targets and espionage activities, underscore the persistent threat. Organizations like the Institute for Strategic Dialogue have been monitoring Russian interference in Germany, highlighting attempts to influence politics and society via disinformation campaigns.
The escalating hybrid warfare tactics raise concerns about the boundary between defense and direct conflict. Experts note the need for clear deterrence against such activities and stress the importance of distinguishing between hybrid warfare and conventional attacks. Lavrov’s recent remarks signal a shift in Russia’s stance on interference in Western nations, hinting at a more aggressive approach ahead.
