On Christmas Eve, a tragic incident occurred in a peaceful neighborhood when an eight-year-old girl encountered a man disguised as Santa Claus holding a large gift. The man turned out to be 45-year-old Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, a devout Catholic and employee in the aerospace industry. He mercilessly shot the young girl before unleashing gunfire in the house where approximately 25 individuals, including numerous children, were gathered for a party.
Pardo was on a mission to find his ex-wife Sylvia following a bitter divorce that had been finalized just days earlier. The divorce settlement awarded Sylvia $10,000, their dog, and her wedding ring while Pardo retained ownership of their home. Struggling to make the $10,000 payment after losing his job, Pardo resorted to this horrific act.
Tragically, Sylvia, along with her parents James and Alicia Ortega, perished in the attack. As chaos ensued in Covina, Los Angeles, guests frantically tried to escape the violence by breaking windows and seeking shelter upstairs. Pardo set the house ablaze before fleeing, leading to the deaths of nine individuals whose identities were confirmed through dental records.
Pardo was later found dead at his brother’s residence, with multiple guns near his body. He had rigged his car with explosives, which detonated on Christmas Day, causing his demise. Investigators also uncovered evidence suggesting Pardo had planned to flee to Canada. Shockingly, acquaintances described Pardo as a kind and friendly individual, adding to the perplexity of his heinous actions.
Despite the tragedy, three individuals sustained injuries, while the deceased victims included family members of Sylvia Ortega Pardo, ranging from siblings to in-laws and a nephew. Two survivors, a 16-year-old teen who was shot and a 20-year-old woman who injured herself while escaping, managed to live through the ordeal, along with the young girl who initially encountered Pardo that fateful night.
