Former jockey Frankie Dettori is facing an extended period of bankruptcy after a judge decided not to automatically discharge his bankruptcy order. During a specialized hearing, the trustees representing Mr. Dettori requested an extension of the order for another year, which was granted by the court.
Bankruptcy orders typically expire after a year in England and Wales but can be prolonged by judicial decision, obliging the bankrupt individual to adhere to the conditions or face potential legal consequences. Despite the proceedings, Dettori did not attend the hearing nor have legal representation present.
Dettori, who recently retired from racing, entered bankruptcy in March 2025 following a tax-related dispute with HMRC in the United Kingdom. The 55-year-old’s financial challenges emerged after engaging specialized tax advisors to manage his and his family’s finances, leading to a significant tax debt.
Liquidators previously stated that Dettori was unlikely to settle his substantial tax liabilities, which amounted to £765,542 owed to HMRC and £6,391 to a car leasing company, with additional fees raising the total debt to nearly £900,000.
During the recent court session in London, Stefan Ramel, representing the trustees, highlighted Dettori’s non-compliance with requests for asset information, including undisclosed properties abroad. Chief Insolvency and Companies Court Judge Nicholas Briggs ruled to extend the bankruptcy order until March 16, 2027, citing Dettori’s failure to cooperate and provide essential information.
Judge Briggs expressed concerns about potential criminal repercussions for lack of cooperation, emphasizing the need for transparency in the bankruptcy proceedings. He also noted undisclosed assets, including properties in France and Italy, a Piaget watch, a valuable wine collection, and investments, which were not fully disclosed.
Despite his legal challenges, Dettori initially retired in 2023 but later resumed his racing career before ultimately retiring in February. Throughout his illustrious career, Dettori achieved multiple British Classic wins and held the title of British champion jockey on three occasions. Presently, he serves as an ambassador for the Amo Racing team.
