A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been held in custody on three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, currently serving a 12-month disqualification from racing due to a previous offense, was denied bail during his court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia last week.
According to Racenet.com, Tarrant faces charges of armed robbery, entering premises with intent to commit a crime, and possession of dangerous drugs. The offense of robbery carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment, which can escalate to a life sentence in cases involving armed robbery, accomplices, or violence.
Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19. The 31-year-old jockey, who has achieved 502 wins including three Group races, notably won the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015.
In 2020, Tarrant received a six-month ban after admitting to headbutting a fellow jockey in the weighing room. Similarly, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for one year for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry regarding alleged falsification of health assessment forms.
The case was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, where Tarrant was instructed to enter a plea. However, despite multiple invitations, he did not respond. The Commission panel emphasized the seriousness of Tarrant’s actions, stating that licensed individuals are obligated to cooperate with inquiries to maintain the integrity of the sport and public trust in wagering.
The report concluded by stating that a 12-month disqualification, effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026, is warranted given the circumstances.
