Police apprehended a 19-year-old individual who was discovered hiding in a dormitory closet at Virginia State University following an overnight shooting incident on campus. The shooting resulted in five individuals sustaining injuries, with one in critical condition. Camron Harris, a resident of Henrico, Virginia, is not affiliated with the university, and neither were four of the injured victims, whose ages ranged from 17 to 23. One of the wounded, a 20-year-old student, has been discharged from the hospital, as per authorities, who have not disclosed the victims’ identities.
Law enforcement officials have not disclosed a potential motive for the incident. Harris faces eight felony warrants, including charges for malicious wounding and using a firearm during a felony. It remains uncertain whether he has legal representation.
Initial reports from the university indicated a search for multiple suspects, although no further details were provided by the police. Earlier statements from university officials assured the campus community of no immediate threat, resulting in the lifting of the lockdown.
The shooting occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday near the Quad Annexes of the university, where law enforcement found the wounded individuals outside the dormitories. With classes set to resume on Monday, the university had recently opened its residence halls for students, following the completion of the “New Trojans Experience” for new students.
The safety and welfare of the university’s students remain a top priority, as emphasized in a statement from the institution. A heightened law enforcement presence was observed on campus, and students were advised to stay updated via email regarding safety protocols and support services. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, were providing assistance.
