The UK Government is arranging flights to assist British citizens in departing Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. Efforts are underway to organize aircraft for the evacuation of UK nationals as the death toll from the catastrophic natural disaster continues to climb. Jamaica has reported five fatalities, while Haiti has recorded at least 20 deaths due to the flooding triggered by the powerful category five storm.
With wind speeds reaching 185mph, Hurricane Melissa stands as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record. The UK has pledged £2.5 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Jamaica. Keir Starmer expressed shock at the footage depicting the destruction caused by the hurricane. The Prime Minister informed Parliament that HMS Trent and specialized rapid deployment teams have been strategically positioned in the region to provide assistance.
Many individuals are stranded without power and facing infrastructure damage amidst the floods. Although Hurricane Melissa has now been downgraded to a category one storm, it is anticipated to bring additional strong winds and heavy rainfall.
In Jamaica, over 25,000 people sought refuge in shelters after the storm tore roofs off their homes. Dana Morris Dixon, Jamaica’s education minister, revealed that 77% of the island is currently without electricity.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness assured in a statement that the government is fully mobilized for the recovery efforts. Relief supplies are being readied, and all possible measures are being taken to swiftly restore normalcy.
Prime Minister Holness described the devastation in the southwest coastal community of Black River as “ground zero,” emphasizing that the residents are still grappling with the aftermath.
The power outages have hindered damage assessment due to a complete communication blackout in certain areas, as highlighted by Richard Thompson, the acting director general of Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, during an interview with the Nationwide News Network radio station.
