A man from the UK is potentially facing a lifetime in prison in Thailand after authorities discovered 1.1 kilograms of cocaine valued at around £70,000 in his possession, reportedly intended for sale in bars.
The 25-year-old individual is accused of smuggling the illicit drugs into Thailand via international mail and attempting to store them at a high-end apartment complex in central Bangkok, where he was apprehended. The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) identified the package as suspicious, leading to a sting operation set up after an employee at the apartment complex declined to accept it due to an unclear address.
Upon the man’s arrival to collect the package, law enforcement promptly detained him. A search of his room also uncovered a quantity of marijuana.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Suriya Lekathikan, Secretary-General of the ONCB, stated that an extensive investigation is ongoing into the drug trafficking network involving foreign nationals. Personal details of the suspect and further information are not disclosed at this stage, with a warning issued to others linked to him within the smuggling network.
The arrest underscores Thailand’s dedication to combatting drug activities utilizing the country as a distribution center. The confiscated cocaine, believed to be destined for sale to tourists in Bangkok’s party venues, was estimated at over 3 million baht (£68,469).
The ONCB highlighted the seizure of cocaine as evidence of efforts by transnational networks to import club drugs, including ecstasy, ketamine, and laughing gas, emphasizing the strict monitoring and suppression of these illegal substances to safeguard society and youth from drug threats.
The British national has been charged with importing Category II narcotics into Thailand for sale, with cocaine falling under this category. Depending on the quantity involved, importers, producers, and exporters can face varying jail terms, including life imprisonment as the most severe penalty.
In a separate incident earlier this month, a young British tourist named George Wilson was accused of attempting to smuggle 9.15 kilograms of crystal meth out of Bangkok, concealed in foil tea bags. Wilson, aged 23, was apprehended in a red-light district hotel after police traced packages from a British individual nicknamed ‘Snoopy’. He now faces the death penalty for the import or export of Category 1 substances.
