A man who survived a bear attack vividly remembers the terrifying moment before the bear crushed his skull, rendering him unconscious. Dan Bigley narrowly escaped death when a large brown bear dragged him into bushes and repeatedly bit his head, causing his skull to crack but miraculously avoiding brain penetration.
Although he lost his sight in the attack, Dan, reflecting on the life-altering incident some two decades later, recounted the chilling noise he heard just before fearing his demise. Recalling the encounter, Dan, a long-time Alaska resident, shared his experience of encountering the bear with his friend Jana after a day of fishing in the forest.
Coastal Alaska is home to the world’s largest brown bears, towering over 9 feet tall and weighing up to 1,500 pounds, known for their speed and agility. Despite Dan’s previous bear encounters, he sensed the distinct aggression of this bear as they attempted to retreat but were attacked, with the bear protecting her cubs hidden nearby.
In the midst of the mauling, Dan vividly recalls the agonizing sound he made, realizing it was his own voice in distress. Sustaining severe injuries, including severed vital arteries, he was left for dead by the bear before help arrived. Miraculously surviving the attack that was initially deemed fatal, Dan underwent extensive surgery and a challenging recovery process.
Haunted by the traumatic event, Dan, now residing in Anchorage with his family, found solace in sharing his story through a book co-authored in 2013, detailing his journey of resilience post the bear attack. Through therapy and personal growth, Dan has found healing and a renewed perspective, emphasizing the resilience and growth that can emerge from overcoming life’s most daunting challenges.
