“Storm Melissa Threatens Jamaica with Hurricane Devastation”

Tropical Storm Melissa is gaining strength over the weekend, with concerns mounting over its potential to evolve into a powerful hurricane in Jamaica. Originating in the southern Caribbean Sea on October 21, Melissa is currently heading towards Jamaica, where it is anticipated to have a significant and potentially catastrophic impact.

Renowned tropical cyclone analyst and hurricane historian Michael Ferragamo, in a warning shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), expressed apprehension about Melissa’s trajectory over the island. He highlighted the likelihood of prolonged heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges, predicting that this storm could be the most impactful in Jamaica in several years.

Comparing the situation to the devastating Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, Ferragamo emphasized the potential severity of Melissa, noting that it could surpass the destructive impact of Gilbert, which was the strongest hurricane on record to hit Jamaica. Gilbert caused significant damage and loss of life when it made landfall near Kingston with winds reaching 115 knots (130 mph).

The aftermath of Gilbert was devastating, with Jamaica experiencing widespread destruction, including roofs being torn off 80% of the nation’s houses. The storm led to economic hardships, particularly in the agricultural sector, with significant losses in the banana industry and other crops, pushing the nation into a state of crisis.

Officials in Jamaica have issued warnings to residents to stay alert as preparations are underway for the impending storm. The Minister of Health and Wellness, Christopher Tufton, announced that public hospitals are on high alert, shifting to emergency mode to accommodate potential medical emergencies.

While airports in Jamaica are currently operational, they are expected to close within 24 hours of a hurricane warning being issued, according to Daryl Vaz, the Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications, and Transport.

AccuWeather’s lead hurricane expert, Alex DaSilva, has cautioned residents across Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica to brace for torrential rainfall, flash flooding, power outages, and possible road closures due to Melissa. The impact of the storm could be severe and potentially catastrophic for the region.
