Britain is preparing for potential chaos as Storm Benjamin is set to bring strong winds exceeding 70mph and heavy rain, prompting concerns about flooding, power outages, and disruptions to travel across various regions. The Met Office has issued several yellow weather warnings ahead of the storm’s arrival on Thursday, October 23, with southern and eastern parts of Britain under a rain warning, and eastern England, southwest England, and parts of Wales under wind warnings.
Weather experts anticipate worsening conditions throughout the day, with possible damage to buildings, falling debris, and delays in transportation. Wind speeds are expected to intensify starting from early morning, with areas like Kent and Lincolnshire likely to experience gusts reaching up to 80mph.
As the storm progresses, Norwich, Southampton, Oxford, and Swindon are also expected to face strong winds and heavy rainfall during the morning rush hour. Coastal regions in the southwest and Wales are likely to bear the brunt of Storm Benjamin, while northern areas will experience lower wind speeds but a significant drop in temperatures, especially in Scotland.
By midday, the situation is predicted to deteriorate further, with wind speeds potentially reaching nearly 90mph across the southern half of the UK, including areas like south Wales, the southwest, the southeast, and London. The afternoon and evening hours are expected to bring sustained strong winds to regions from Manchester downwards, with gusts of up to 88mph forecasted for areas like Leeds, Bradford, and the Yorkshire Dales.
The storm’s final impact is anticipated around 9pm, with the strongest winds returning to the southeast, where speeds could peak at 90mph, affecting areas like Norwich, Essex, Kent, and London. Chief Met Office Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks has cautioned that wind gusts may exceed 70mph at times, urging the public to stay updated on the evolving weather forecasts and warnings as the storm progresses.
