Shaun Murphy Slams Matchroom Over Champion of Champions Scheduling

Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom for the scheduling of the Champion of Champions event that took place on Monday. This frustration stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals, only four days prior.

The snooker player found himself in the tournament’s opening match, facing Lei Peifan and suffering a significant 4-1 defeat. Murphy, 43, revealed that he was informed about his Monday match while returning from Nanjing, learning about the event’s order on the day of the competition.

After his loss to Lei, Murphy voiced his disappointment with the tournament’s organization, criticizing Matchroom for what he described as disrespectful treatment. He highlighted the lack of communication and expressed his shock at the handling of the event, emphasizing his long history with Matchroom.

In contrast, several other players who did not participate in the recent International Championship, such as Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, are scheduled to compete later in the Champion of Champions event, rather than on the opening day like Murphy.

Matchroom responded to Murphy’s remarks by acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing their commitment to prioritizing players and fairness. They explained that groupings are based on seeding and acknowledged the challenges of scheduling, promising to improve for future events.

On the same day, World No. 1 Judd Trump secured a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei later in the evening. The upcoming matches feature various players, including Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski, Allen vs Ziao Xintong, Williams vs Burden, Selby vs Maguire, Robertson vs Ford, and Higgins vs Xiao Guodong.
