Elena Rybakina has come under fire from tennis legend Pam Shriver for refusing to take a photo with a WTA official. The Kazakhstani player clinched a major victory at the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia by defeating world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, earning a substantial £4 million prize.
Traditionally, the tournament winner is photographed alongside WTA CEO Portia Archer. However, Rybakina opted not to stand with Archer during the trophy presentation, leading to an uncomfortable moment.
Rybakina’s actions were seen as a protest against the suspension of her coach, Stefano Vukov, for breaching the WTA’s code of conduct. Vukov, who guided Rybakina to her Wimbledon triumph, had faced scrutiny over his behavior towards her. Despite initially being banned, Vukov successfully appealed the suspension and resumed his coaching duties.
Rybakina expressed her satisfaction with Vukov’s return, stating that they had never encountered any issues and that he had always treated her well.
Following the incident with Archer, Shriver criticized Rybakina for snubbing the WTA CEO, highlighting the importance of upholding player safeguards in sports. Shriver also voiced her disapproval of Rybakina’s decision to continue working with Vukov.
During her post-match press conference, Rybakina refrained from elaborating on her reasons for avoiding Archer but criticized the WTA for their handling of the Vukov matter.
Despite the disappointment of Sabalenka, who had a remarkable season with wins and strong finishes in major tournaments, she acknowledged Rybakina’s superior performance in their match.
Sabalenka, visibly emotional, admitted to feeling the effects of age and sensitivity during her defeat, acknowledging her opponent’s dominance on the court.
