Robbie Williams Questions Noel Gallagher’s Songwriting Legacy

Robbie Williams recently made a somewhat backhanded remark about Noel Gallagher, suggesting that the magic in his songwriting seemed to fade after the initial success of the first few Oasis albums.

The feud between Robbie and the Oasis brothers, Liam and Noel, was one of the longest in pop history, sparked by Noel’s remark calling Robbie the “fat dancer from Take That,” leading to a public challenge at the 2000 BRIT Awards.

Although tensions have eased over the years, Robbie now points out that Noel’s songwriting brilliance seemed to diminish post the release of Oasis’ early albums, “Definitely Maybe” and “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?”

During an appearance on the Heretics podcast, Robbie reflected on the ebb and flow of creative magic in songwriting, highlighting Noel’s exceptional talent during a three-year streak where every song seemed like a hit. However, Robbie noted a decline in Noel’s songwriting prowess post the third album.

Acknowledging Noel’s continued talent as a songwriter, Robbie questioned the fleeting nature of creative inspiration, drawing comparisons to Paul McCartney’s enduring magic and suggesting that no artist can sustain peak creativity indefinitely.

Robbie’s observations align with Noel’s own actions, as demonstrated by the limited inclusion of post-1997 songs during the Oasis Live ‘25 tour, indicating a shift in creative output.

Despite their past conflicts, Robbie recalled his admiration for Oasis during the mid-90s music scene, expressing a desire to emulate Liam’s rockstar persona rather than conform to a boy band image.

Reflecting on his own creative journey, Robbie admitted to facing writer’s block, prompting him to revisit his 1995 mindset for inspiration on his upcoming album, “BRITPOP.”

Robbie emphasized the need to reconnect with the carefree creativity that defined his early albums, steering away from overthinking and commercial pressures to recapture the essence of his musical roots.

As he embarks on this new musical chapter, Robbie embraces a liberating return to his artistic origins, prioritizing authenticity over chasing commercial success.
