“Premier Insurance Insolvency Leaves Thousands Without Car Coverage”

Thousands of motorists could find themselves without valid car insurance starting today due to a recent provider insolvency. Premier Insurance Company Limited, a UK insurer offering car and motorcycle coverage, entered administration last month. Policyholders are urged to secure new insurance as their existing policies are no longer valid.

Affected individuals who have already switched to a new insurance provider will have coverage in place. It is estimated that approximately 16,000 customers and small businesses were covered by Premier Insurance before its collapse. Claims will now be managed by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) as the company is no longer processing payouts.

Premier Insurance ceased issuing new policies in January 2025 and the administrators, Freddie White and Bradley Chadwick of Grant Thornton, have been appointed. Sarah Marin, the chief customer officer at FSCS, reassured policyholders that the scheme is working closely with the insolvency practitioner to protect eligible UK customers.

In the UK, car insurance is mandatory and must be renewed annually, with options including third party, third party fire and theft, and fully comprehensive coverage. When seeking new insurance quotes, utilizing comparison websites like Compare the Market, Go Compare, and Confused.com is recommended. The optimal time to renew car insurance, according to MoneySavingExpert.com, is 20 to 26 days before the current policy expires.

Direct Line is one notable provider not featured on comparison sites, so contacting them directly may yield competitive quotes. Consumers are advised to explore cashback options on platforms such as Topcashback and Quidco when switching policies.
