A shocking video captured a daytime street ambush outside a cell phone store where an off-duty police officer intervened by shooting a suspected robber and assisting in the apprehension of another individual.
The incident took place recently on Avenida Paula Ferreira in Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil. Luiz Fernando Souza Nunes de Viveiros, the off-duty officer, witnessed two men confronting a delivery driver outside the store he was in.
Upon one of the suspects announcing a robbery, the officer swiftly took action, firing his weapon and hitting one of the suspects, identified as Michael Santos Preto, fatally. The other suspect, Joao Renato Macedo dos Reis, attempted to flee but was subdued by members of the public shortly after.
Despite trying to use a gun against the officer, the weapon malfunctioned, as reported officially. Authorities cordoned off the area for investigation, collecting evidence with forensic teams at the scene.
The Sao Paulo State Department of Public Security confirmed in a statement that the suspects resisted arrest, resulting in one fatality and the arrest of the other individual.
