Mitchells & Butlers Enacts Menu Price Hikes

Mitchells & Butlers, the parent company of popular dining establishments such as Toby Carvery, Harvester, and All Bar One, has recently implemented price increases across its menu due to anticipated additional costs of £130 million in the upcoming year, compared to the £100 million extra costs incurred in the previous financial year.

These cost escalations are mainly attributed to the recent rise in employer National Insurance and minimum wage rates in April, coupled with an increase in food prices. The government’s announcement of a 4.1% minimum wage hike in April further contributes to the financial strain.

Phil Urban, the CEO of Mitchells & Butlers, highlighted that a significant portion of the projected £30 million increase in costs is driven by the surge in beef and steak prices. The company has witnessed a substantial 30% surge in steak prices, prompting an average price hike of 3.2% on menus and beverages since October.

Despite the cost challenges, the company aims to balance pricing strategies to avoid deterring customers, ensuring that quality and portion sizes remain uncompromised. Mitchells & Butlers reported a 20% increase in pre-tax profits to £238 million for the year ending September 27, showcasing resilience amid financial pressures.

To mitigate the impact of rising costs, Mitchells & Butlers has implemented operational efficiencies, including a labor scheduling system, auto-ordering processes, and energy-saving initiatives. Despite a 4.3% growth in like-for-like sales over the year, final-quarter performance was slightly subdued at 3.2%, primarily influenced by weaker trading conditions in London and premium brand segments.

In the initial eight weeks of the new financial year, sales growth stood at 3.8%, indicating a steady start for the company. Mitchells & Butlers continues to navigate the evolving economic landscape by prioritizing operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction.
