“Is Your Internet Slow? Blame Too Many Devices!”

If your internet connection seems sluggish, the culprit might be the number of devices connected to your router, as per insights from Uswitch. Recent findings suggest that the average UK household hosts around 16 internet-connected devices.

Certain gadgets, like video doorbells, remain active online, transmitting data continuously. This constant data flow can lead to slowdowns, affecting activities such as video calls and streaming services like Netflix, especially in residences with basic internet connections.

Broadband can be likened to a road; the more traffic it handles, the slower it becomes. While full-fibre systems can manage heavier traffic efficiently, older copper cables may struggle to keep up.

Moreover, there’s a concern with ‘phantom’ devices, which stay connected to the network despite being inactive.

According to Uswitch, these devices remain online, performing background tasks like updates or data exchanges with the router.

To enhance connectivity, consider upgrading to faster full-fibre speeds if your home accommodates numerous smart devices. Additionally, disconnecting unused devices can lead to an immediate speed boost.

Max Beckett, a broadband expert at Uswitch, emphasized the impact of idle gadgets on network performance, advising users to declutter their connected devices for smoother internet experiences.

Regularly reviewing and powering down unused devices can prevent network congestion, ensuring a seamless online experience. Additionally, managing connected devices and optimizing video streaming practices can significantly improve connection quality.
