Halfords has made the decision to close all its stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day this year. The automotive retailer aims to provide its UK staff with a well-deserved break to enjoy time with their families. While Halfords outlets will be shut on Christmas Day as well, they will resume regular operations on all other days during the festive season.
According to Henry Birch, the CEO of Halfords, the closure on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day is a gesture of appreciation for the hard work put in by the company’s employees throughout the year. Birch emphasized the importance of allowing everyone to unwind and reconnect with loved ones, ensuring they return refreshed for the upcoming year.
This decision follows Halfords reporting an uptick in sales and profits in the previous half-year, with a notable 9% increase in cycling business sales compared to the same period last year. Overall revenues rose by 3.3% to £893.3 million, supported by growth in motoring and autocentres segments.
Other retailers, such as Home Bargains and Aldi, have also opted to keep their stores closed on both Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Home Bargains expressed gratitude towards its employees for their hard work and encouraged them to relax during the Christmas break. Meanwhile, Aldi will extend its operating hours leading up to Christmas to accommodate customer needs before the holiday.
In alignment with the festive spirit, Aldi UK’s Communications Director, Rebecca Heley, highlighted the importance of giving colleagues the chance to enjoy the holiday season with their families. This decision to close Aldi stores on Boxing Day is a token of appreciation for the dedication shown by staff in ensuring a wonderful Christmas experience for customers.
