A close friend of a British individual who tragically passed away after consuming illicit alcohol abroad has shared the harrowing story of her deteriorating health following the consumption of tainted shots. She is now advocating for increased measures to prevent methanol poisoning.
The Foreign Office recently expanded its list of countries deemed at risk for methanol poisoning due to the presence of counterfeit or contaminated alcoholic beverages. This list now encompasses Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda following reported incidents. Methanol poisoning occurs when methanol is surreptitiously added to drinks like cocktails and spirits to enhance quantity and reduce costs.
Symptoms of methanol poisoning include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion, with more severe signs such as visual disturbances manifesting between 12 to 48 hours post-consumption.
Bethany Clarke, a 28-year-old from Orpington, London, embarked on a backpacking trip to Southeast Asia with her companion, Simone White, 28, last year. Both women inadvertently ingested methanol-laced shots, leading to illness, and tragically resulting in Simone’s demise.
Bethany expressed deep sorrow over the inclusion of more nations on the risk list, emphasizing the urgent need for further action. She emphasized the necessity for increased public awareness and highlighted the potential for more fatalities unless the British authorities take more decisive steps.
Bethany, now residing in Brisbane, Australia, stressed the importance of sticking to sealed beverages individuals have opened themselves to avoid potential risks. Reflecting on their journey, Bethany recounted their experience of unwittingly consuming methanol-laced shots in Cambodia before traveling to Laos.
Despite feeling unwell the morning after the shots, Bethany and Simone proceeded with their plans, only realizing the severity of their condition later on. They exhibited early signs of methanol poisoning during their activities but attributed them to other causes initially.
The situation escalated as Bethany fainted and Simone continued to suffer from vomiting, leading them to seek medical attention. Despite initial confusion in a local hospital, Simone’s deteriorating condition prompted a transfer to a private facility, where, unfortunately, it was too late to save her.
Bethany shared the emotional turmoil of losing her friend to methanol poisoning and underscored the importance of raising awareness and implementing preventive measures. She highlighted the necessity for stronger education campaigns and stricter government interventions to combat the risks associated with tainted beverages.
Bethany urged individuals to be cautious and avoid consuming unsealed or suspicious beverages to mitigate the dangers posed by methanol poisoning. She emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to prevent further tragedies.
