Former Red Bull executive Richard Hopkins has shared an update on the health status of Michael Schumacher and expressed doubts about the likelihood of the Formula 1 icon making a public appearance again. Schumacher, a seven-time world champion, sustained a head injury in a skiing accident in December 2013, leading to the privacy of his health condition.
Since the accident almost 12 years ago, Schumacher’s health has been kept away from the public eye after he was placed in a medically induced coma. Hopkins, who previously worked at Red Bull and had a close bond with Schumacher during his racing days, emphasized the importance of respecting Schumacher’s privacy regarding his health.
In a recent interview with SPORTbible via William Hill, Hopkins mentioned that he is not privy to recent updates on Schumacher’s health and highlighted the family’s wish for confidentiality concerning his condition. Despite acknowledging his distance from Schumacher’s inner circle, Hopkins refrained from divulging specific details about Schumacher’s well-being out of respect for the family’s privacy stance.
Having developed a friendship with Schumacher in the 1990s while working at McLaren and later assuming a prominent role at Red Bull, Hopkins underscored the significance of maintaining discretion around Schumacher’s health status. He noted that even close acquaintances like Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, and Gerhard Berger, who visit Schumacher, uphold a code of silence out of respect for the family’s wishes.
Hopkins emphasized the family’s desire for confidentiality and respect, indicating that regardless of any personal knowledge he may have, sharing information about Schumacher’s health would go against the family’s wishes.
