A couple in Braintree, Essex, has successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to just £40 by participating in a new energy scheme trial. Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, installed a unique system in their shed consisting of over 500 computer banks that generate heat, which is then channeled into their hot water system.
Previously, the Bridges were spending £375 monthly to heat their two-bedroom bungalow. Since implementing the data centre in December 2024, their bills have significantly decreased to a range of £40 to £70 per month. Mr. Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at no longer worrying about heating costs, especially given his wife’s spinal stenosis condition, which requires a warm environment.
The innovative HeatHub data centre, developed by Thermify as part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, aims to help low-income households transition to net zero emissions. The system has also integrated solar panels on the Bridges’ roof to enhance energy efficiency.
Mr. Bridges commended the scheme, emphasizing the effective heat distribution throughout their home, eliminating cold spots. The compact size of the data centre, installed in their shed, has optimized space utilization without compromising the aesthetics of their garden.
Thermify’s CEO, Travis Theune, highlighted the dual focus of providing clean and affordable energy through their innovative solution, aiming to eliminate fuel poverty in the UK. Daniel Greenwood, from Eastlight Community Homes, praised the successful trial at the Bridges’ home, showcasing significant carbon reductions and cost savings.
This trial is part of the SHIELD project’s initiative to deploy similar solutions in 50 more homes in the next phase. UK Power Networks aims to scale up this program to benefit 100,000 households annually by 2030, ensuring that all communities can access sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions aligned with the UK’s green energy transition goals.
