At least 63 individuals lost their lives in a tragic incident when two buses collided on a highway in Uganda. The buses, traveling in opposite directions, attempted to overtake other vehicles leading to a head-on collision. One bus swerved to avoid a crash but ended up hitting the other bus, both packed with passengers.
The collision caused a chain reaction, leaving the buses mangled across the highway and other vehicles skidding to avoid the wreckage. Rescue teams arrived at Kitaleba village to find numerous injured passengers on the roadside, with concerns that the casualty count may rise due to serious injuries.
The crash occurred just after midnight, resulting in one bus being completely destroyed. Images from the scene depicted the aftermath of the mangled wreckage and workers clearing debris. Additional vehicles involved in the collision included a Toyota and a Tata lorry truck.
Injured passengers were transported to a hospital in Kiryandongo, and authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the crash’s cause. The police emphasized the importance of cautious driving, particularly avoiding dangerous overtaking, which is a leading factor in accidents in the country.
Uganda has a history of fatal road accidents attributed to narrow roads and speeding drivers. In a recent tragic incident, a bus carrying mourners overturned in Kenya, resulting in numerous casualties. Official police data revealed an alarming increase in road crash fatalities and injuries over the years, with careless overtaking and speeding being major contributors to accidents.
In 2024 alone, 5,144 individuals lost their lives in road crashes in Uganda, a rise from previous years. Careless overtaking and speeding accounted for a significant portion of documented crashes in the country, as highlighted in the latest police report.
