David Lammy Urges MPs to Uphold Hillsborough Law

MPs have been cautioned by David Lammy not to weaken the Hillsborough Bill, stressing the need for swift enactment of the legislation to prevent future state cover-ups. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining the current robust form of the historic law to ensure that injustice has no place to hide. Scheduled for its first debate and vote in the Commons on Monday, the landmark Bill is the result of a long struggle by the families of the 97 Liverpool football fans who tragically perished in a fatal crush during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final.

Referred to as the Hillsborough law, the Public Office (Accountability) Bill was introduced by the government in September with a commitment from Keir Starmer that it will not be diluted. The legislation aims to establish a legal obligation of transparency for all public officials, including police officers, with penalties for dishonesty or concealment of information. It also seeks to address the imbalance in legal representation by expanding access to legal aid.

Victims have expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and truth in previous cases, highlighting the need to end cover-ups and protect the trust that should exist in the system. Families affected by the Hillsborough tragedy have endured decades of challenges marked by attempts to conceal the truth. The delay in recognizing the unlawful killings at Hillsborough further underscored the need for accountability and justice.

Support for a duty of candor for public officials extends beyond the Hillsborough incident to other tragedies like the Grenfell Tower fire and the Post Office Horizon IT scandal. The legislation faces a series of parliamentary steps before potentially becoming law by spring 2026. The ultimate goal is to provide families facing state entities with the necessary legal support without financial constraints.

Mr. Lammy emphasized the importance of upholding truth, accountability, and dignity for grieving families affected by various injustices. As MPs prepare to debate the Hillsborough Law in Parliament, the focus remains on fulfilling these essential promises for those seeking closure and justice.
