At the recent founding conference of Your Party, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for unity among the 2,000 delegates in attendance, aiming to move beyond internal conflicts that have plagued the party since its inception. Despite rumors of disruptions, the event proceeded smoothly with only one minor heckler.
Corbyn emphasized the importance of coming together to advance the party’s mission of promoting real socialism and social justice. However, tensions arose when ex-Labour MP Zarah Sultana criticized the expulsion of party members just before the conference, denouncing a culture of witch hunts within the organization.
Following a brief boycott, Sultana eventually addressed the conference, acknowledging shortcomings in the party’s establishment and expressing regret for inconveniences caused to dedicated activists. Notably, members voted against a single leadership structure in favor of a committee of ordinary members to lead the party until 2027.
As the conference concluded, Corbyn revealed the party’s official name, “Your Party,” chosen through a members’ vote. He stressed the importance of unity and collaboration as the party moves forward with its unconventional leadership model. Time will tell if this call for cohesion will be heeded by all members.
